Ask Jerry
Character with special needs
Asked by Julie Becker on December 5, 2023
Hello Jerry! I am thinking of giving my main character a disability – such as dyslexia or learning disability/special need. Do you think it will get in the way of the story? The value it brings is that my character overcomes many obstacles in spite of her disability. But many readers may not be able to relate.
Thank you!
Jerry's Answer
Readers don't need to relate to the specific disability she has. They will relate to having flaws of any kind--and everyone does. :)
