Fiction and “writer’s block.”

Asked by Sarah Rexford on April 16, 2020

I’ve often heard you say writer’s block isn’t an excuse not to write, just like worker’s block isn’t an excuse not to show up for work. I completely agree and went ahead and wrote a new beginning for my book. However, I’m going to toss it. I think I’m in “writer’s rut!” I can write, and am writing all the time in other capacities, but I’m not liking any of the fiction options I come up with. Feeling pressured to write a new beginning to my book (as quickly and as well as I can) so I can jump on resubmitting to the publisher. Advice?

Jerry's Answer

Take a little break from it, Sarah. Maybe four or five days. But target the day on your calendar when you're going to devote yourself solely to that new beginning.

Then make it sing. It's time to get you published. :)
