Final edit recommendations
Asked by Lewis Jenkins on December 17, 2020
Dear Jerry,
After reading Steven King's On Writing again, I am nearly done polishing my first novel, Diary of a Robot. I had this novel edited by Doc Hensley (3 yrs ago) and Diane Goullard (1 year ago, including fact-check), but I've made many changes since, and am willing to buy a last edit. Doc and Diane first read the book through without making any marks other than the occasional x to mark a spot. Their second read is when the blood flowed. I ask if you can recommend anyone from your short list of editors who will do the same: not make marks until finishing the book.
I ask this because the story is like the Butterfly Effect: Most troubles start with small things—small decisions or events—that have huge consequences, sometimes much later. The challenge for me as an author is to make every page interesting while the trouble builds. Mr. King says he usually writes this way, and I need an editor who values such a construction.
