Does an authors note count as your first pager or is it considered a separate piece before the story starts? Thank you.

By whom, Pam? And who cares? I ask that with a smile. Are you wondering how to number it, or what?

If you use one, your sequence should go:

Title Page

Dedication

Epigram (if any)

Author's Note

Prologue (if any)

Chapter One

Of course an author's note is part of the front matter and pre-story, but it doesn't affect anything. I avoid writing them because I think they interrupt the ficitional construct, but people as successful as Stephen King use them, so who am I to argue?
