Ask Jerry
Illustrating and writing a book
Asked by Charisse Sotto on January 3, 2024
I was part of the office hrs. today and my question was not answered. Although I enjoyed the content. My question is. It is hard for me to ask this question because I don't want to come across as boasting. Being committed as others to produce the best work possible. I want to be both the writer and illustrator of my children's book. It is rare to b both and in addition my illustrations are that of a different style, being hyper-realistic and emotive in quality. Is there an approach to submitting my work to a publisher?

Sure, Charisse, you're always able to submit to publishers, though I think you'd benefit from first interesting an agent who could represent you and your work.
That said, as you imply, it's unusual for a writer to also illustrate, and frankly, publishers are dubious about this and generally discourage it. They have their own stable of illustrators and like to assign them.
But if you truly believe in your art, there's no harm in taking this approach and seeing how publishers respond.
Keep us posted on how it goes.
