Learning Your Craft – Where and How to Begin?

Asked by Antony Steventon on May 22, 2020

Hi Jerry, there is a lot discussion about 'learning the craft'. Do you have any suggestion about how a beginner should set up a learning programme, please?

I have a raft of books about learning to write and feel overwhelmed not knowing where to begin. Right practice and practicing the right things seems challenging and confusing.

I am only interested in writing nonfiction, but appreciate the benefits of incorporating fiction story telling techniques into nonfiction writing. I have started learning about rhetoric and literary devices such as metaphor and simile to add colour to my writing.

Learning grammar is a given and there are many superb books on the subject.

The difficulty I have is tying it all together into a structured, creative and supportive learning process.

Any suggestions you can offer will be gratefully appreciated.

Thank you for providing a truly excellent website and learning resource.

Thanks, Antony. I would start with the Guild's own 9 Days to Better Writing. And then check these out:

Also, under Bonus Material, try The Art of the Start.
