Published Articles For Use In A Book

Asked by Donna Gurr on April 22, 2020

Jerry, I've had a couple articles recently published. Yay! Having said that, I am unclear if, since they've already been published, it would be possible or advisable to use them as part of a book? Would my book be less desirable to publishers by the fact some parts have already been published?

Jerry's Answer

Not necessarily, Donna. If they fit, they could add value to the book. But you must be certain you retain the rights to use them again. Google "what article publishing rights did I sell?" to see some helpful advice on this.

Another caveat is that a book should be much more comprehensive than any one article could be, so be sure a republished article enhances a more complete chapter on whatever the subject is. Many beginning writers try to turn collections of blogs or articles into a book, which usually doesn't work. Readers expect more from a book.

All the best with it. :)
