Ask Jerry

query vs proposal and referrals

Asked by Grace Jamison on April 4, 2020

Most agents on query tracker want queries and/or a synopsis as part of the submission process, but no agents so far have asked for a proposal. Is this standard for Christian publishers only, or am I misunderstanding the process? I've also visited a few of the Christian agent websites. Not many seem to be accepting submissions without a referral – is that standard in the Christian market, and if so, how would I be able to find an influencer who might be willing to read my work and possibly refer me?

Jerry's Answer

Grace, the publishers use the query and synopsis to determine whether they want to see a full blown proposal. They tell me they are deluged with submissions and that this is the only way to help them manage the load.

And watch the latest Master Class interview (two parts) with super agent Rick Christian, who explains why he thinks the referral-only policy is necessary.

Agents and publishers do peruse magazines and ezines, looking for talent, so that's another way to get a foot in the door.

Otherwise, the best way is to try to connect with publishers' reps at writers conferences.
