Unresolved sub-plot romance for main characters
Asked by Jeremy Webster on September 24, 2020
Q: [From the "Endings your readers will remember" webinar.]
My novel, (that is not a romance novel), has a sub-plot of a quite conflicted romance with the main characters as to what the couple will do. (Note that there is a definite resolution to the main plot.) I have realized there is a sequel to this work. Do I need to resolve the romance or can I leave it a unresolved?
Jerry's Answer
I think you can leave it unresolved, Jeremy, if the rest of the story has a satisfying conclusion. Readers can identify with unresolved relationships that continue -- especially if you do return to it in the sequel.
